What there is to know About me

On this page, I want to further introduce myself to you. I'm 26 years old and I live together with the woman of my life and our 2 cats in the Stuttgart area in Southern Germany. As described in detail below, my first contact with the Internet was quite early and my fascination for the Internet and its related fields remained ever since...

My IT Life

How it all started
My first contact with a computer was a 486 DX2 my dad bought in order to make his tax declaration and other paper work when I was about 11 years old. A couple of weeks later, I was quite good in moving around Windows 3.11 and started even helping my dad to get along with the machine he bought.

Getting there
Soon, using Windows 3.11 and playing Pacman and Solitaire became boring. Luckily at about the same time there was a new study group in school striving to create a school homepage and teaching new members HTML. I didn't hesitate a second and joined my school's homepage student group immediately. I picked up HTML quickly and enjoyed coding websites more each lesson. I probably was the only pupil at my school to that time who had a homepage without having Internet access at home. I edited my pages via Notepad at my dad's computer and then carried them on floppy disks to the school library in order to upload new updates to my site. Unfortunately, I did not learn anything about backups at this stage which is why I don't have a backup of my first (and second) homepage.

My first and very own computer
At the age of 14, I got money for my confirmation and it was pretty clear that I would buy my first own computer from that money. I bought a Pentium 166 MHz MMX with 48MB Ram and a ~ 4 GB hard drive and a 15" IBM monitor. I still get sentimental when remembering the day I picked up my first computer from the store and how much fun I had with it.

From penguins, feathers, dolphins, camels and pythons
Not long and playing computer games and creating static websites with HTML and Notepad just didn't kick it anymore and I started to wonder how to create a guestbook for my website. This was my first dive into web development and programming in general. I started to read articles, manuals and books on Apache webserver, CGI, Perl, Python and MySQL. This was the time I got to know a good buddy in school which introduced me to Linux, first Suse Linux and then Debian GNU/Linux. I started using a cheap 486 as a Linux server, especially as a webserver and database server. At the age of about 16, I had 3 computers in my room, one running Windows 95 and the other two running Debian (one as a Linux client with a graphical user interface and one as a server without any graphical user interface). While others stayed out late at parties, I sat in my room and tought myself how to run a Linux server and how to create dynamic websites. This was the key moment, I decided I would have to study computer science to satisfy my thirst for IT-related topics.

A lot of books, classes and projects
Until I passed my university entrance diploma at the age of 19, I had some student jobs and interns in the IT sector and did a voluntary project for the school's Intranet portal. After finishing school I started to study Applied Computer Science at the local university but also applied for a special study program at IBM Germany. Two semesters later, IBM invited me to an assessment center in Stuttgart which I attended and was offered one of 20 student positions in their program. I learned a lot during my studies and during the interns within IBM in Stuttgart and Munich. Finally on Sept. 30th 2007, I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Applied Computer Science and was released to the business world. The rest of the story should be pointed out in the short vita above. I certainly did not tell the whole story here, so if you're curious about the details just drop me a message and I'll be glad to get to know you!
